The new pivot point for the year ahead will be calculated on the 1st of January. There are various pivot point trading strategies in the market; this one is especially we created for our fellow traders, our strategy is backtested on demo and even on trading simulation, so you no need to put the work required to find out the probability of this strategy—all we suggest you follow this strategy very well to make consistent money from the market.
Pivot points most often work very well in trending market conditions; some traders even use pivot points on lower timeframes to scalp the markets. The strategy is to find out the uptrend in any instrument and wait for the pivot point to go above the Pivot point centerline, and then wait for the pullback back to the pivot line to take buy entry. You can close your position at resistance one if the market momentum is choppy, and even in a strong trending market, you can also book the profit at resistance two or three.
The image below represents our buying entry in this pair. Notice that the day before our entry price action breaks the pivot line and the very next price action pullback to the pivot line. Keep in mind that the pullback must hold at the pivot line then only it confirms the buy trade, never place the limit order at the pivot line. Let the price action test the support line take entry. The image below represents our entry, exit, and take profit in the GBPAUD forex pair.
When you follow so many steps to take an entry, it means that you are going for the precision in the market, and for the precision entries, always put the stop loss just below the entry price. In the image below, notice that our stop loss was just below the pivot line, and for the take profit, we go to the R1 of the next day, which was R2 for the previous day.
If the price action immediately approaches the R1, then you can expect the price action to hit the R2 or even R3. If the price action shows you the struggle to hit the R1, then simply do not expect the deeper targets. Moving average is a widely used indicator in the market which smooths out the price action by filtering out the noise from the random short-term price fluctuations. There are an infinite amount of moving averages in the market, which helps the traders to identify the market trend, entry, and exit also the potential reversals.
When the moving average goes above the price action, it means that the trend is down, and when it goes below the price action, it indicates the uptrend in the security. In this strategy, we used the 30 and period average to trade the market. The trading strategy is, first of all, to find out the downtrend in any pair and wait for the prices to close below the pivot line also check the crossover above the price action on a double moving average to take an entry.
As you can see in the below image of the NZDCAD forex pair, it indicates the selling entry in this pair. In a downtrend, when the price action holds below the pivot line, it shows that the prices respect the resistance area; also, the crossover on the MA indicates the market is ready to print a brand new lower low.
The below image represents our entry, exit, and take profit in this pair. As you can see, the entry was when prices hold below the pivot line, and the stops were just above the pivot line because the holds below show that the buyers hold no power to break above the pivot line.
After our entry, price action strongly blasts to the north, which shows that we can expect our trade to travel even longer. Price action holds for some time at the S1, and then it immediately blasts to the S2 and prints the brand new lower low. Pivot points are the leading indicator in the industry, which provides a glance at potential support and resistance level in the market.
These levels are useful for taking an entry, or it can be useful for putting stop loss or for booking profit also. AS the leading indicator, you can use them all alone to trade the market, or you can pair them with some other indicator to trade the market. The critical benefit of pivot points is they work on all the financial markets also on all the trading timeframes.
Try not to use this indicator in the ranging conditions and also avoid the use in the highly volatile markets. Furthermore, these technical indicators can be very useful when the market opens.
An excellent way for individual investors to become more attuned to market movements and make more educated transaction decisions comes from having an awareness of where these potential turning points are located. Given their ease of calculation, pivot points can also be incorporated into many trading strategies.
The flexibility and relative simplicity of pivot points definitely make them a useful addition to your trading toolbox. Advanced Technical Analysis Concepts. Technical Analysis Basic Education. Pivot points are a vestige of the days before electronic trading that were calculated manually in the past by floor traders. Pivot points are still a key element of technical analysis to many traders today and many pivot point strategies exist to take advantage of these important horizontal support and resistance levels.
The pivot point P itself is simply an average of the high, low, and closing price of the previous day, week, or month typically the previous day. The first resistance R1 and support S1 levels from the pivot point can be calculated by multiplying the pivot point by 2 and subtracting the Low or High respectively. Finally, the third resistance R3 and support S3 levels are calculated by subtracting the Low from the pivot point, multiplying by 2, and then adding the High or subtracting the pivot point from the High, multiplying by 2, and subtracting then subtracting the Low.
Better yet, there are indicators for your trading platform that do the calculations automatically, like this pivot point indicator for MT4.
Below are 3 profitable pivot point strategies. The examples are geared toward Forex traders but these techniques work in other markets as well. Other trading techniques that take advantage of trends and reversals, like divergence trading , will also work well with these pivot point strategies.
However, when you do get a confluence of signals along with a pivot point signal, these can be very powerful. The pivot point bounce is a classic trading strategy. The idea is that if price is above the pivot point, the market sentiment is bullish.
If price is below the pivot point, the market sentiment is bearish. The pivot point bounce takes advantage of market sentiment, buying or selling if price retraces back to the pivot point which is historically a good horizontal support or resistance level. Note: In the example above, I used a morning star , which is a strong bullish candlestick pattern, as my entry signal.
You can also use pivot points and the various support and resistance levels calculated from them for trend trading. The idea is to take advantage of retracements at significant levels after price has chosen a direction based on the pivot point.
If price breaks through the first support or resistance level convincingly, and then retraces, you can buy or sell the bounce off of that resistance level. Note: In the example above, I used a bearish engulfing pattern , which is a strong bearish candlestick pattern, as my entry signal. Pivot point support and resistance levels can also be good places to take reversal trades. If price is showing signs of slowing down near the second or third support or resistance levels, these can be good places to buy or sell respectively — especially if these levels line up with previous market structure.
The idea is that, at support or resistance levels 1 and 2, price is likely to be extended. Since these levels are also typically good horizontal support and resistance levels they are great areas to look for reversal trades. Note: In the example above, I used a shooting star with a confirmation candle which is how I prefer to trade them as my entry signal.
The entry was taken when price pulled back to the standard entry point. These 3 pivot point strategies are just a few of the many pivot point strategies that traders use to take advantage of these strong horizontal support and resistance levels. In fact, regardless of which trading strategies you use, pivot points can be a strong addition — especially for intraday trading. Each level of your pivot point calculations can be significant on their own. However, these levels are particularly powerful when they line up with previous structure support and resistance levels in the market.
I hope you enjoyed these 3 profitable pivot point strategies. Be sure to backtest and demo trade any new strategies before live trading them. I read your review on DTFL , personally I do work full time, but I do have access to my phone so I can use MT4 during this time, to a reasonable extent. I was just wondering if you think it would suit me?
No problem. I used to have a contact form on the site but I got a lot of spam, so I got rid of it. You can always contact me on Facebook or by leaving a comment as you have. To answer your question, I would recommend DTFL to any Forex trader that is looking for a profitable trading system, as long as you can check your charts and adjust the levels that we trade stop runs from throughout the London or NY session.
If you do decide to go with DTFL, you might want to look into the DTFL Pro EA. Hi Chris — thanks for the notes on Pivot Point strategies.
Warm regards from South Africa Sylvester. Hello again, Sylvester. Thanks for the comment. Hi Chris, Thank for your insight on these strategies. May I know which time frame will you base these on?
Is there a significant difference between LTF vs HTF as the R and S are all the same no matter which TF we are using.
I see it as either getting in early or late and thus also the SL being more or less. I trade on 15M to 1D time frames. Everything is more significant on the higher time frames. Plus, the spread is a smaller percentage of the trade cost on higher time frames.
Traders generally trade the lower time frames to get more trade opportunities. The exception is trading systems like Day Trading Forex Live , where we use the 15M time frame to get a more detailed look at how the smart money is moving the market. That being said, if the market is going to move as you predict, you will typically get a better buy or sell point on the lower time frames, like you mentioned.
Chris, What a book. Well done. Loving it. Do you wait for price action signal before entering a trade? Thanks for the kind words, Anthony. Most of the trading that I do today is with the Day Trading Forex Live system.
